Surfing Waves

Hey, I'm going to be studying abroad my junior year. I was wondering which college had the best weather/ closest surf spots. I can choose between University of Wellington and University of Auckland. Which do you think is better?

I studied at the University of Auckland for a year, amazing uni, amazing place

Oh and by the way in terms of weather and surf Auckland kicks Wellie's ass!

Well, I just actually got the brochure, I might try to go to Griffith University in the gold coast of Aussie. It's not cemented yet where I'm going to go. I just wanna go to a college that has good surf nice weather, and isn't too far from the beach because I'm only going to be 20 when I study abroad, I don't think thats old enough to rent a car. I'm still looking into NZ though. Would I be able to rent a car for a semester if I'm 20?

You can drive at 15 in NZ, just buy a POS car for $500. You don't have to get insurance either, but it's cheap, so probably worth doing.

When are you going?

If you want real good waves, but not such good weather, go for the university of Otago, on the South Island, in Dunedin. It gets really harsh in the NZ winter there, May - Oct, but on the good side, it's pretty close to Queenstown and Wanaka for some snow.

Wellington has great waves quite near, over the hill in the Wairarapa. Then there's Mahia, Gisborne, and Taranaki all within a few hours drive, they all go off, but you could also get to those easily enough from Auckland.

Auckland is a much bigger city, lots of surfing options, nicer weather, but more crowded.

If it was my choice, I'd go to Dunedin and take some warm clothes. Pumping waves, incredible scenery, chilled out, low crowds etc etc, and a really good uni.

I think for car rentals you have to be over 21 in most of the car hire places in Auckland. In terms of considering the uni's themselves, Auckland were some of the best courses/ tuition i've ever had....

Just buy a banger, no need for insurance, make suer it has a WoF for the length of time your there and will mechanicaly hold together.
