Costa Rica in August

I will be taking 2 teenage boys (14) to CR in August. They are both beginner+ surfers. Looking for advice for a good beach break with decent waves where they will not get hammered. Would like to be within 2 to 3 hours driving time of San Jose airport.

The only beaches within 2-3 hours drive from San Jose is either Puntarenas area or the Jaco area. Don't bother with Puntarenas, water quality in August there is horrible.
Jaco has a good safe beach break with a smaller break area for beginners. Lots of accomodation options, Hermosa and Esterillos are close for bigger action, most people speak some english in Jaco.
