Wetsuit needed in Lanzarote?

Postby theboykidney » Fri Oct 05, 2007 2:10 pm

Howdy,

Heading out to Lanzarote for a weeks worth of surfing. Just wondering if wetsuits are needed this time of year?

If so, would a shortie do the trick?

Cheers,

TBK

I'm off there on Sunday!!!

I'm not taking a wetsuit as the water is at its warmest right now, 23 degrees. The air temp is still 24 degrees, so if you get cold wearing boardies there must be something wrong with ya!

If you're really worried you could take a shortie, but I don't think you'd need it.

Enjoy and see ya in Caesars!!

:D

Just realised I'd already replied to you regarding Lanzarote and you said you were going to a surf school. These places usually supply wetsuits, but they are more to protect knees and ribs other than for warmth.

I'm just back from there i used a shortie but plenty of people were just wearing shorts/rash vests.

If you are going to surf school all the schools i seen were wearing full suits.Like Real Pol said probably more for protection than warmth. If it's your first time surfing you'll probably be using the soft boards and they rip your knees arms etc to shreds if you are wearing a shortie.I know how raw my hands were after my first lessons on a soft board i hate to think how bad my knees etc would've been with a shortie.

Were you there last week chaotic? I just got back on Sunday.

I was just in a rash vest and shorts, it was fine but when the sun went behind some clouds it got a wee bit chilly, but never any colder than surfing over here!

In the future if I go to the Canaries at the time of year I'll take a shortie, but only cos I feel the cold like a little girl.

Hey Real Pol, Hope you had a good week!I got back on the 4th. Famara was really good all week. Didn't bother with the surf school though as i was too late in trying to book so ended up just renting a board.

The shortie was fine for me even on the couple of days that were a bit dull & breezy early morning! Felt quite sorry for the surf school folks who were running round the beach doing an after lunch warm up in full wetsuits they must have been dying to get in the water after that!
