Good points, took my eye off the creeping gentrification of Ulus. Made the mistake of thinking the luxury real estate and restaurants weren't sustainable even before covid. Though given the China slowdown, makes you wonder where all the dollars and tourists are coming from, or will come from. So much of that post-2013 hotel boom, airport expansion, and air routes out of Tier 1-2 Chinese cities was driven by the expectation they'd keep coming.

Bali's got loads of chill spots with waves to catch in December. Renting a board there is easy peasy, so no need to bring your own. And who knows, maybe the girlfriend will get hooked on surfing too.

Aside from Uluwatu, you can also go to the western part of Bali, like Medewi. It's been famous for years, but people rarely discuss the area. It's quieter than your typical Uluwatu crowd.
