Oh dear hope hope your injury doesn't affect you much now.
Yes that rocks=.= I almost trip myself...Hearing you I have to count ourselves lucky as we did not get any major injured. Only normal surfboard knocks

Frankly I am not sure who our coach was. He was recommended by our driver and we just went with the flow. But I don't think it was from Afei shop. Not sure if it helps but he have a black dog who followed us to the beach  .

I know he is not a "proper surf coach" and he doesn't seem like he have much knowledge of the wave condition compared to Balinese I encounter (those who rents boards on the beach). IMO they seem to have a better knowledge of their wave and current.

Yea I went in Nov and the lake was connected to the river unless I recall wrongly. It was raining the day before.

Wanted to try out Nanwan but was on a tight schedule >.<

My Brother on separate trip to Yilan didn't have a great time because of the locals who doesn't seem very welcoming... No he did not snake and waited for his turn in case you wonder...but it was never his turn because he doesn't belong there

P.S: Not saying Taiwanese are unfriendly...most I met are really nice people out of the water that is.

Bloody hell, what ever happened to saying NO, say no to surf conditions if you can't handle them! Say NO to dubious instructors transport drivers. In a foreign country especially one that is new as a surf destination scams and non qualified "trainers etc " exist.

A good rule of thumb, would your instructor , driver or anybody else associated with your care be able to save or aid you in an emergency?

Learners are particularly vulnerable, but saying no to unsuitable situations is a major surf survival skill.
Develop it quickly :D

The black dog is a stray dog that lives there. He is very friendly with all the locals there. If he brought his own black dog then I probably know who it is. Did you see what car he was driving? If it is the mini blue bus then I think I know who it is.

I'm really curious because it is a small community and there is only a handful of surf instructor. It's pretty much turf wars and we have two groups of people that hate each other.

Yilan is deadly, much better now but it is controlled by local gangs. You will get a good beating if you meet the wrong people.

Hmm the driver and "coach" is actually pretty friendly and nice I wouldn't call them dubious. Just that I feel he lack the skills/knowledage... Well the wave isn't 10ft so didn't seem dangerous and we were on whitewater. I wouldn't say the condition was deadly just not suited for learning ....the rocks oh the rocks. Well I would bill even on a 5ft wave lol. But yea I should have take note if anyone can save me in case of emergency

The black dog was with a dog collar and followed him from the shop to the beach so I thought it was his. Not sure about his bus as we came with our driver who was actually arranged by the hotel. He is not a very tall guy...about 5'2+ .

Frankly I tot we were going to the beach where all the shops/rental will be like in Phuket and Bali but it seems different in Taiwan???
Ahhh Taiwan seems very complicated  When you mention deadly in Yilan do you mean the wave or the people...Gang! ...good thing my brother came back safe especially since he went alone.

I hope you only got charged 1800 TWD per person. We all had an agreement to set the price to the same. Jialeshui and Taidong is undeveloped, which is what I like. I would like to keep it that way. Shops/rental are only in Yilan. Once you have learnt how to surf then you will like Jialeshui, we call it the longboard heaven. Not so good for shortboards.

The rip at Yilan is deadly during Nov/Dec. Summer are the gangs. They won't kill you but you might get a few punches. However if you're white, then they normally won't touch you.
