Can't Decide Where To Go

Postby oceangrrl » Wed May 31, 2006 5:59 am

For my senior trip i have an option of going to different places, mainly to surf. So far i've narrowed my options to Tavarua, Costa Rica, and Hawai'i.

I was wondering what you people should reccommend if you've been to any of the three. I'll most likely be going around June. Thanks for the help.

First of all; you're very lucky girl and I envy you.
I've never been to any of the three......yet (hopefully I can go there eventually) but your question leads me to find out more about the places and here's the summary;

Costa Rica surf runs between April and October. This goes the same for Fiji/Tavarua. Where as Hawai'iruns between October and March.

There are 2 factors you need to consider; what your surf skill level is and what's your budget.

If you are advance level and/or above with no money problem then your choice narrowed down to 2 . Costa Rica and Tavarua (from few articles I read, Tavarua seems to be pretty expensive place) as they have better swell in June. If budget is tight then you're down to one choice; Costa Rica.

If you are beginner level then you're most likely down to 2 choices again. Costa Rica or Hawai'i. I could be wrong but I don't think Fiji is the place for beginner level surfing. I'm sure there must be some beginner spot but the place is not well known for that. But again, it's all down to your budget. If money is tight, Costa Rica would probably better choice than Hawai’i. However, If money is not a problem for you then I'm sure you can even learn to surf in Tavarua as well.

Whichever ever choice you make, I'm pretty sure you're going to have a lot of fun. :)

Wow! Thanks for the help! I did some research and all that but i was just wondering from people who have gone to either of the three but you did help by giving me some thought on the matter such as money and such.. I've been surfing for about 2 years (weekly) now and I'm pretty much a solid surfer by now. :)

I have family in Hawai'i so renting out a hotel will not be necessary... As for Tavarua ($2,000 for a week stay, not bad at all), my friends uncle owns the resort there so I can easily skip the year wait for a room there and as for costa rica... I'm gonna have to rent a car to get to Tamarindo from San Jose because that's where the airport is and getting to Tamarindo from the airport is about a 5 hour drive (long but fun)

hawaii has plenty of surf in the summer. that dude is crazy. in fact, for majority of us who live in honolulu, summer is the season for surfing. hmm... drive through 3 hours of tourist ridden traffic to look at 30 foot waves that are too big for any normal human to surf unless you are looking to kill yourself, or 10 min. drive to some 3-7 foot waves...

Which crazy dude? Are you referring to me ?

I specifically said I have never been to any of the three places. All information I've written is based on the swell season information that is written in this site for Costa Rica and Hawaii. I maybe a misinformed person about Hawaii, but I didn't realise this makes me a crazy person. :cry:

But then again, I don't mind being crazy. You've gotta be to live in this world. Oh and btw, I am no dude, and thank God for that! :D

You can say that again. :P

June is one of the best months for surfing the Pacific coast in Costa Rica. You should check it out online before you decide. But I think any of those 3 places would rock.
