Best time/place to surf Cali/Oregon?

Hey guys, just a little background. i have never surfed but i plan on doing a trip with a buddy (who has surfed) next summer to Cali/Oregon. What is the best month for waves and weather for those two states and also can anyone suggest some surf spots in cali/oregon that we must hit (nothing to extreme, haha)

I live in Canada so all my research must be done online which kinda sucks but any help would be appreciated.
