Spain Shuts Down For August Hols

Sun-seeking Brits and Spaniards fuel coastal rental incomes as they make the most of Spain’s month-long holiday.
As Spain’s traditional August holiday commences, millions of holidaymakers are arriving in Spain’s airports and flooding the nation’s motorways as Brits and Spaniard’s alike head for prime holiday locations.

July 31st saw the first wave of traffic kick in, with additional police deployed to deal with choke-points, traffic jams and accidents. According to Spain’s General Traffic Directorate around 3.4 million individual automobile journeys took place between 3 p.m. on Tuesday and midnight on Wednesday, with the highest concentrations of traffic leading to the Spanish coastal regions such as the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca.

Nicknamed Operación Salida, or Operation Exit, peak travel hours occurred between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, with most traffic heading from the centre of the country and steamy cities such as Seville and Madrid towards the Mediterranean coast, converging on roads in the regions of Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Murcia and Andalusia.
In addition to 8,350 civil guards on highway duty, 400 traffic technicians oversaw conditions during the two days, with a fleet of 18 helicopters keeping an eye on highways around the country in a bid to minimise accidents, as last year 40 people died during Operación Salida.

While businesses across the country are closing their offices for August, fiestas are erupting in every village and town, while holiday homeowners can expect to see high rental yields, and a great seasonal return on their investment.
