Surfing Portugal

Postby Ragdoll » Mon Jan 15, 2007 5:51 am

Am planning a surf trip to Portugal and france in Aug/Sept, Was wanting to get the heaads up on some places to go and the places to stay the hell away from. Surfed Biarritz/ Hossegor last year so am def heading there but was wondering if there are any good places further north? Heard that the coast at Lisbon was meant to be good...... can anyone confirm?

Thanks heaps. :D

Hi Ragdoll,

If it's any help I've been to Portugal 4 or 5 times and I fly into the Algarve, rent a car, drive straight out to Sagres on the S.W tip. 3 or 4 fantastic spots around there most noteably 'tonel' for big surf, and 'beliche'. You can always drive up the west coast to find more spots.

Drive away from Lisbon towards Monte Estoril, Cascais, and on toward Sintra. Staying in Monte Estoril is cheap too. Stop by the travel office there close to the train station and ask if they know of any houses to rent there. I had one for $30/night that was amazing!

Hey, do people surf at Guincho (am I spelling that correctly?) Beach? I vaguely remember stopping there and it being a beautiful beach but couldn't remember if anyone was surfing there. I looked at your website. Looks nice!

Yeah Guincho is a pretty good beach if you are lucky with the winds as it gets pretty strong ones, specially after noon.
But if that one is not working, there are many more around the area. :)

definetly go to ericeira !!!
i have been there twice and i can tell that it is best place to stay , u have a lot of spots there like coxos praia de matadouro reef and many others , and u can also go to peniche for good surf in supertubos without handeling the bad smell of the factory in peniche
there is a very good camping with all u need warm showers , ironing place and everything u need for 2 euros maximum a day or u can just have apparments in the place if u ask

North of Portugal

Postby RSousasurf » Wed Feb 14, 2007 10:24 am

Try the Portuguese north coast. Next to Porto (Oporto) there are excelent surfing spots and no crowds (compared with the rest of the country. Espinho is really good, Maceda is excelent and there are 20km of uncrowded beaches with perfect waves....

On the other hand you have close by the Cultural PORTO, world heritage. Beautiful monuments, excelent food and wine (Port Wine) and pretty cheap to.

See you around!

Peace OUt!
