Anyone with experience surfing in the Carribean? Where? Longboarding or shortboarding? What time of year? Did you bring your own or rent?

I surf in Trinidad whenI go home, and I finally made it to Tobago too. I would say between Christmas and Easter are the best times, but having said that, just before I left Tobago for sunny England yesterday, I had a really fun sesh. If you're going in summer, I would definitely suggest a longboard/minimal or something floaty. Between Xmas and Easter, it gets bigger, and you should be fine on a shortboard.

We live at the spot Encuentro in the Dominican Republic and I think this is the best or one of the best spots in the Caribbean. Contests like the Latin Pro (championship of all Latin American countries) have been here and there are pretty good waves all year round. In summertime on average lower than in wintertime. In summertime on average 1 to 1,5 meters high and sometimes higher (1,5 - 2,5 meters). In wintertime on average 2 meters high and sometimes higher (until about 4 meters). Most days here are good enough for a short board, sometimes a long board. If you can it is always better to bring both.

The spot is very beautiful, no mass tourism and not crowded. It is close to the village Cabarete, which is a great place with nice restaurants and bars, a good nightlife, relaxed atmosphere and friendly people. The country itself is very beautiful and the Dominicans are nice and friendly. Close to the spot is not many accommodation

thanks for info on the carribean. I appeciate it. I'm going to go to Barbados for a week - seems like it has a ton of options for surf. DR and Trinidad both look like awesome spots.
