Alright,
Best place in Ecuador to go is probably Montanita. It's dirt cheap to live there, i stayed in "El Tierra Promita - The Promised Land", which was the happening Israeli Hostal. It was awesome. You can hire boards there for like a couple of dollars a day.
It's mostly a beach break, which has a habit of closing up, but there is a point break at the far end that kicked off on occasions. Remember that in August/September it's going to be their winter season, i was there in May and it was still pretty hot (It's so near the equator it never gets cold) and i was out in just boardies...
I travelled with a guy who went to Galapagos, its well expensive for a backpacker, but i hear the surf is good, mostly pretty dangerous though, since they are volcanic islands (i think). I don't think its as accessible there or as well provided for.
If i were you i would get myself down to the south of ecuador, cross the border and go to Mancora in the north of peru. It's right near the border (so not much of a trek) and it is one of THE BEST PLACES IN THE WORLD!
Golden sands, palm trees, desert in the background, point break, gorgeous appartments, which are very cheap, good food...
There is a place "the milk bar" on the beach front where all the surfers hang where you can get a pint for 30p and an ice cream sunday for 30p, you cant really argue with that. I stayed in las Olas, probably the nicest and most reasonably priced place i stayed in all over south america.
Anyway, thats my twopennyworth, if you need any more advice just ask...
