Mentawais January/February

Postby nirajpatel13 » Thu Jun 08, 2023 3:36 pm

Hello all,

Looking to pair up a diving trip @ Raja Ampat with the the Mentawais in January/February 2024.

I am a beginner surfer. I feel comfortable and can catch green waves up to 4 feet and do basic turns.

Any recommendations on where to go in the Mentawais or if this is even in my league?

I've read multiple posts and it appears most of the breaks are for real surfers but it looks like the waves are smaller in the Jan-Feb and some resorts may be near more beginner waves more for my level.

I just really want to surf and improve my skills...and the Mentawais look absolutely AMAZING. (plus this would be the best dive/surf trip ever)

thanks in advance.

I just came back from 2 weeks there. I probably wouldn't go back. Winds werent great which meant only 3-4 spots working and because of that 30-40 people at a take off point. Very busy and agro.

I would look for quieter places and not as commercialised. Best of luck!

The Mentawais fluctuate year to year with crowds Jan Feb is low shoulder season possibly rainy and small waves are there with less optimum condition wind wise, but still some good wave are had.
Bear in mind most breaks are reef breaks over coral, Because there are so many islands and breaks. all swell and wind dependant you will need a stay that gets you what is available on given day.
If you are lucky the boats are in dock using the quieter time for upgrades and service.
Nothing skunks a quiet surf as much as when a boat load of frothers comes to ‚‘‘SHARE‘‘,

As for commercialised certainly the bigger resorts are , but you can find right down the food chain to homestays, ( but with less flexibility of surf ).

In the Mentawais, there are resorts that cater to all levels of surfers. Macaronis Resort, for instance, has a beginner-friendly Surf and Stay package. They are situated in an area near Playgrounds, which typically has smaller waves during Jan-Feb. This resort also offers diving packages, allowing you to make the most of your trip. Have a great time!

Hi, I’m coming a little late to this thread.

We have a beautiful locally owned camp right outside Beng Beng, known as the most fun and consistent wave in the Ments regardless of Tides.

In January/February - Beng Beng is most reliable along with Burger World, which is a boat ride away.

If you would like more information please email us, or check out our website.
