I'm new to both surfing and Taiwan but am super stoked to learn how to ride. I was recently down in the south near Kending but the surf was so small that it was pretty much un-rideable (I did manage to catch a couple short waves on a mammoth board). A couple of friends and I are located in Taichung and we've been wondering about the surf in Da'an? I've heard that there is a small break there but we were wondering as well if you are able to rent boards there.

Thanks for any help that you can give,

Jordan

Hi Jordan. I just started surfing surfing myself. Just tried it yesterday at Daan. I have a calling card of a place where you can rent and buy gears in Daan. Boards are 500 a day and lodging is 400 per person i think.
He was even nice enough to take me to the spot where they surf. About 10 minutes ride with a scooter from their shop. Although there are a few spots where you can walk to near the shop.

Hope it works out.
If you have a hard time figuring out where it is, i suggest you get a Taiwanese friend to ask for directions.
If you still can't find it, just send me a message here. I'll try my best to draw a map for you :-)

I hear you

I surfed the southern beaches of Taiwan last year and had a total blast. All along the east coast you'll find empty waves, and there's a few spots on the west coast too. Here is a link to my blog with info and a video... http://www.maitravelsite.com/east-and-se-asia/surfing-taiwan/

Here are some pics :)

Hi Guys,
I have the opportunity to live and work in Hualien city, however i don't want to go unless im close to good surf. Does anybody know if there are decent waves close to the city? Ive tried searching but I cannot find reliable info. Thank you very much.

Where are you from and what kind of lifestyle do you enjoy? It's important because the east coast especially Hualien is very different to the rest of the country.

Not much information on the surf spots because we do not want to share them online. Even when it's pumping with overhead clean waves, I see no more than a dozen of surfers. We would prefer to keep it like that. Also it's not very beginner friendly waves, it can get pretty big and with giant rocks in the water that you have to go around.

There is excellent surf in Taiwan, it functions different for the east and west coasts, Hualien has some excellent spots and can be serve by northern winter pPacific swells, if they are really big the civil guards shut thee surfing down Look for Jici near Hualien beginner level
Baxian Dong a better and stronger left hand gravel point beach, really liked it. Further south east coast Jaileshui an east coast river mouth rock bar on a river mouth interesting lefts and rights changes after heavy rains.
Be aware there is no life saving and those swell can get near Hawaiian power
Half the fun is finding but you will need a car, Typhoon swells pump the west coast but you have to cross the centralmountain range. :D
The experience there is great,
Be interesting to be in the work culture too

Footnote to BaNZ he is right it is not a bucket list country, and you‘ve got to know where to go!
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

Just for the first year then try to live somewhere right on the beach. Just wondering where you took those photos. The ones that arent named, they are just img then some number. Looks pretty sick. Hope to hear from ya soon mate.

If you're looking for a place right on the beach in Taiwan, Kenting in the south is known for its beautiful beaches and is a popular destination. It's a great spot for surfing and water activities. Alternatively, some coastal areas near Taitung on the east coast also offer a more laid-back beach lifestyle.
