Madagascar in august

Postby ale k » Mon Jul 31, 2017 9:18 am

Hi everyone,

I am going to Madagascar in August for couple of weeks.
I am reading as much as i can but there are not many information about Madagascar, even less about surfing over there..
it would be really great to have some suggestion from a real experience!!

Will go for about a week in the north around Diego Suarez, then I have about a week to go surfing, but dont know where.
As i understand, the choice is between Tulear area, Lavanono, Fort Dauphin and Mahanbo (know almost nothing about the last place..).

My level is something between beginner and intermediate, but I dont surf since 1.5 yrs bcos of an accident, which i didn't recover completely yet. So I need to take it easy.
I am looking for a place with mellow waves and some surf facilities, as I would rent surfboard there..anything from 7.6 to longboard would do the job. The best would be to have also some other interesting things to do, other than surfing.
I am not a party person, I like trekking, diving, explore surroundings, either nature and small villages, talk to locals ...

Any of your tip would be very useful and really really appreciated!!
Thank you so much

alex

Hi Ale glad to hear you are recovering and continuing to travel, remember some of the areas are really the toad less travelled .
Unless you meet super secret spots leave us some sign, posts and tales of your travels, it is enjoyable stuff. :D

Hi Alex! It´s already one year since you post, so probably you will not see it but just in case....the thing is that my boyfriend and me are looking for exactly the same suggestions as you asked, so I´m wondering whether you found some good surfing spots when you visited Madagascar!
thanks!!

An interesting question Ale, do you actually get to all these places you ask about? Or are you secretly compiling a travel guide based on what we advise you?
Wows if you get to all the destinations, now you owe us, how about an Ale K review of the destinations you have been to!
Lots of fun in the sun now you‘re done!

ahahahah

Jaffa, you find my first review under the Panama post! :)

The second is coming here!

yeah, last 2 years I was pretty lucky to be able to travel to such great places!

Madagascar was more of a "total trip" than a surf-trip .. out of 3 weeks, I just surfed a few days in lavanono .
i enjoyed, waves were okay, the place is magic and Gigi (the owner of the only resort in a 200km area!) is a great person.
Surfing-wise I have to say that the spot is polivalent for surf/SUP and kite/windsurf, which means that - for what i've experienced - it is somehow fickle.

There are more stunning spot on the reefs of the Vezo coast but - as far as i know - u need local knowledge to correctly read the conditions and also transportation in madagascar is a nitemare. I will come back to surf those reefs once i get a better level and put together a bunch of friends that do not mind a bit of adventure. I mostly travel alone but here would be too expensive for a solo trip.

Anyhow, Madagascar remains probably the best trip so far. Stunning nature, great people, lot of adventure.. fantastico!
Totally recommended!

speak soon for the next review :)
