Baja North trip

Postby tomthetreeman » Sat Oct 27, 2018 1:45 pm

We are headed to Baja North in January, staying at a little guest house, La Paloma Azul, shown on the map. Walking across the border and renting a Mexican car for the week. The circle shows where I’m planning on surfing... Any other tips besides general travel advice? We own a home in Mexico, so we are aware of all of the international travel stuff, just looking for specifics about the area, i.e, restaurants, hot springs, where best to rent a board (K38 or Alisitos?), and of course, anything you might be willing to divulge about the breaks!

Also, I read on a blog that access to the break at Salsipuedes is now limited because of a road closure, any news on that would be helpful as well. Thanks!

Hi Tom,
hope you have a good time. Amusing reflection about your post above. It reads like an invitation to me! Do not be surprised if I turn up!

The guest house has a second room as far as I know. I’ll pm you more details.

Are any of these spots near "The Wall"? My cousin was a grad student at UCSB and surfed there 10 year ago, but I'm having a hard time finding any specific info. Apparently "The Wall" isn't the most specific description of a surf spot lol. I'm also considering a trip to Baja this January (21st-30th).
Why have the Goons come? What has angered them so?

I don’t know about the wall, but I’ll be there at that time, though. I plan on surfing whatever break is mellow, right, and chest high. ;)

Lafonda/La Mission Is a pretty decent beach break, it can still be fickle like any beach breaks.
My favorite is San Miguel. Just on the other side of the creek from the third toll about 10 or 15 minutes north of Ensenada. Definitely worth the drive but bring money to get in the gate I have no idea how much it is now.

Getting stoked... Water temp/wetsuit question: regular 3/2 ok, or should I go with my body glove one with the liner? It's a 3/2 but performs like a 4/3.

Here’s where we are in relation to Ensenada.

Tom

I'd go with a 4/3. That's what I was in during my last session two days ago in SC. I got cold and wished I had worn my hood, but I still surfed for two hours fairly comfortably. Also, I rarely find that I get too warm in my 4/3. Have fun! I miss the days when Baja was still no man's land, but these days it's like a suburb of San Diego. Only tip I have is to stay away from the spot at the rivermouth where the detritus from Tijuana and San Diego flow into the ocean (I forget the name of the beach, Rosarita or Imperial maybe), but the water quality can get nasty there I've read.
