New Zealand Surf Trip

Postby travelnow123 » Sun Nov 05, 2017 10:16 am

Hej hej!

I'm going to New Zealand at the end of December and I want to stay for approx. 6 weeks and then head to Indonesia or some of the pacific islands. I was thinking about renting a car and buying a board and then explore the country and go surfing!! I've been surfing for a few years now, but still beginner level! Soooo, I don't want to go by myself! I want a crew for fun and adventure and shark patrol ;) Who is in?

Cheers

Good time to go Laura, Southern Hemisphere summer, not as hot as Australia, but good chance of good surf the west coast of the northisland is a surf Mecca, from Piha down to New Plymouth, Check our surf map within surfing waves and there are New Zealand surf guide Books.
The Raglan and New Plymouth areas have surf schools and are popular so good chance of company for safety reasons.
South Island different again with an Alpine spine and European cold water, mostly east coast surf especially good, Christchurch to Kaikoura.
Driving back an forth across the alpine spine is scenic but langweilig a bit like between München and Salzkammergut before any motorway.
Great trip though!

I would suggest coming back through Indonesia as middle of 2018 is the swell season for the whole of the Indonesian Archipelago and beginners spots abound, as do beginners.
Are you goofy or natural?
You will find New Zealand unglaublich, enjoy and ask further there are several Kiwi forum members. :D

You're probably better off joining some facebook groups like 'Work and travel New Zealand' and 'New Zealand rideshare backpackers'.

Ps. the east coast north island surf mecca that Jaffa mentions is actually on the west coast :-D

You’re absolutely right, somebody whacked a bloody typo earthquake on Raglan and The entire west coast north island surf coast.
Good thing I didn’t include Aripara as well!
Actually Laura have a good look and consider Aripara too!

We just went to New Zealand in February, and it was an amazing experience! My top 3 favourite things include:
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Taupo lake
Hobbiton
