Family surfing in Portugal April

Postby dudes » Wed Jun 21, 2017 5:54 pm

Hi,

My son (13) and I recently tried some surfing and we are looking to do some more. We can do some weekend trips to Devon / Cornwall from Brighton. But would like a longer family holiday, we are booked to ile de re, which has a shore break in the summer, so too hard for us I think. Next time we could get away is Easter and thought Portugal could be good.

We will go with my wife and two other kids 6 and 16 who may give it a go but probably would probably prefer to play on the beach and use a hotel pool in April.

I have had a look around but I am a bit lost. Any recommendations for a good beginner spot close to a hotel with a heated pool?

Perhaps I'm hoping for too much?

Thanks

Over Easter, we go a bit more south to Conil in Andalucia. The Hipotel Gran Conil is a great hotel directly at the beach, has a warm enough outddor pool to swim in (not sure it is heated). With the Waterman School it has a nice, very family friendly surfing school directly in the hotel. The spot below the hotel (Fontanilla) is a soso beach break but beginner friendly. 10 mins south by car you have El Palmar, a really good spot (no good hotels there).

Portugal is probably a bit more safe in terms of wave quality as Andalucia tends to get very small towards May and summer.

Thanks Oldie,

It looks very nice, the website says the hotel if fully booked but perhaps they have not opened booking for April. I pretty keen to get some good beginner surf for me and the family. It's also good the hotel is on the beach in case my wife and other kids are not loving surfing.

Me and my son had loads of fun in two foot waves at banthum the other day, so perhaps so so surf is fine. We usually hire a car so can hire a board and go to the other beach you suggest on some days.

I'll ring the hotel later, thanks for the advice.
