Can anyone explain the stormrider icons?

Postby RobSF » Sat Mar 25, 2017 2:21 pm

Hi, folks.

I've been using the Magic Seaweed site/app for a couple of years now for my local break. It's been great for basic tide and wave and wind information. But the "Stormrider" icons they use are a mystery to me. I can sort of make them out, but I can't believe there isn't a legend available anywhere. It's like learning heraldry. What does a circle with one wavy line going diagonally across it mean? What does an arrow pointing to the upper left mean? etc.

These could be useful when I'm checking out other locations if I could just read them.

Thanks to any initiates.

Can you post a screenshot showing the icons? On the Surf Forecast screen you can hover the mouse over most elements to see a popup of what they describe.

Unfortunately, although I got a screenshot from my iPad, I can't figure out how to post it here. (iOS doesn't let me find files to attach.) If I eventually figure out how to share a photo from my device, I'll do it. But the icons don't link to anything or give pop-up text when touch them with my finger (the equivalent of mouse-click when you're using a pad).

It's not the screenshot I'm having trouble with BoMan. It's posting the picture. This interface doesn't let me post the picture without accessing it as a file, which you can't do in iOS. I'll do it tomorrow when I have access to a Mac.

Sorry for the boring tech discussion.

You could of course buy the Stormrider book or IBook and the icons are explained ther and you will know a lot more potential spots

Wait. Actually pay for something? (What's unforgivable is that I work for a book publisher.)

Ok . . . I got ahold of a laptop. And it turns out the whole problem is that neither the magicseaweed nor the surfing-waves site* is iOS-optimized. Sure enough, passing a cursor over a glyph does bring up the text explaining it. (But when using a pad, running your fingertip over the glyphs does nothing. No pop-ups.) Anyway, in the glyphs attached

the meanings are, left to right: mid- to high tide / peaky beach break / sand / SW-N / southeasterly / 2-12 ft.

All of which sound about right. And the next time I want to find out about a beach I haven't been to, I'll know to look at the site with a laptop and not a pad.

Wasn't this fascinating?

Rob

*surfing-waves works pretty well on an iPad. You just can't include an image from your device in a forum post.

Yes you can take a screen shot add to your photo album.... then use the upload attachment function. This automatically sizes the attachment then select load file and then place in line

You did this from a phone or a pad, and not a laptop? (We are going WAY off topic here, aren't we?)

Save a picture to your photo library

Hit 'add attachment' on this site as jaffa said, choose 'photo library'

This post is from my iPhone. Photo is sideways to upset those with OCD
