Surfing around Cancun?!?!

Postby Siborg » Mon Aug 23, 2004 10:28 pm

Hi there,

Been booked on a family trip to Cancun, and desperately want to catch some waves, it won't be a holiday without catching something (beside STD!!!well, have heard the american college students vacation there!!)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Q: Is there surf in Cancun/Cozumel? A: It depends on who you believe.
Manny writes from Cancun:
Hey man I live in Cancun and I've been surfing here for several years.......and yes Cancun and all that area gets good surf...the only problem is that is not constant, if you go in December try to go when a storm from the north is blowing.... don't worry, you wont get stormy surf you'll get glassy 6' to 8' solid surf.......the best places to go.....if you are in Cancun go to playa Chac' mool or el Mirador...... if you want to drive south go to Puerto Morelos a point break Calle Punta Brava or the reef half a mile into the ocean, or better yet if you want the best surf in the area go to Cozumel island the other side of the island has a great point break Calle Punta Morena there when a swell is 4 to 6' in Cancun in Cozumel you can get 6' to 8' or 8' to 10'....don't be afraid to take the trip....
About Cozumel:
I hear that Cozumel gets some surf in the winter, from September through January, usually when the storms blow in from the north. The East Coast of the island gets swells up to 10 feet.
'Nacho' is the local lifeguard and surf guru who also rents boards at the Punta Morena Restaurant aka 'The Naked Iguana'. You may be able to find Nacho evenings at Joe's Reggae Bar.
The Gulf Coast and Caribbean in general do not get much surf except for storm swells. The cold fronts in the winter and hurricanes in summer will bring the waves up.
Bottom line: If you want consistent surf in Mexico you gotta go to the Pacific.

mexico rocks!

hey.. i just went to cozumel to surf about 2 weeks ago.. i had no clu what to expect and i didnt even kno if i would be able to rent a board to use. i looked at this post b4 goin there and i thought that is was goin to be impossible to find the naked iguana resturant.. but, to my surprize wen i was in costa maya i talked to this guy names antonio and he told me to go to punta morena and to find his friend to get a board.. i still thought it was goin to be impossible even after getting all that info.. but, the next day wen i was in cozumel my family and friends reanted cars and went driving and ended up at this beach with WAVES!!! and guess what.. right next to it was the naked iguana.. i went looking for the owner but, couldnt find him. i saw sum ppl working and tried to talk to them. i finally figured out that they were saying that he wont be there till 11.. just as we were about to give up and go bak to the other side of the island he showed up!! he was really nice and gave us boards to use.. i didnt get to stay long but, it was sooo worth it!!! it was a lil over head high and CLEAN not like in florida. it was the best surf session i;ve had. i will deffinately be bak there asap!! so thanks for posting that info.. it was really useful and made my vacation AWESOME!!!

We took a Carnival Cruise from Galveston to Cozumel 12/22/14......rented a taxi for the day ... $100..... she took us to Mezacalitos Beach... Straight across the island from the terminal... rented a board for 35.00.... surfed an hour in knee high , crystal clear azure waters .. with no one in the water .... amazing
