Beginner surfing in Hawaii - WINTER

Postby lucascm » Sat Aug 20, 2016 5:40 am

Hi, i am planning a trip with a friend of mine for like 2 months in winter season, we were looking at Hawaii but we are a little bit afraid not to find a place for beginers/intermidiate surfers on that time of the year.
If you wouldn't mind giving some good spots for begginers in oahu or maui it would be awesome. Which one of both do you guys recomend?
Thanks a lot.

Which hemisphere's winter do you mean? Northern one is one area of surf and southern another!
Waikikikichan or Oldman may be your best advisors. If northern hemisphere winter then the south shores but go and check out the famous stretch of Oahu's north shore and terrify yourself.
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

Hawaii is made up of islands and during the winter big swells often hit the north side of the islands which makes for a swell also on the northeast or northwest side and a wrap around further down the coast. These swells are not for beginners but somewhere there will be surf suitable for beginners. During the winter the south side has often small swell suitable for a beginner and the east or west sides may have more or not. The east side generally has a wind swell due to the prevailing tradewinds and if the tradewinds are blowing there will be breaks suitable for beginners on the east side. Even on the north shore during the winter there can be wave suitable for beginners but I wouldn't count on it.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
