Looking for a good beginner break in the US

Hey all,
I am leaving my current country to start a nomad trip in a few months, but I am having trouble picking a location.

I am very much a beginner surfer, and would like to spend the first few months of my trip focused on improving my surfing. That said, I can't seem to find anyone recommending any US spots (mostly its only south america and indonesia).
I know that the US might not have the best surf, but I want to start my travels there - can any of y'all point me in the direction of a beginner-friendly break, with non threatening locals and (obviously preferably) not crowded?
I'm planning to leave sometime in May, but I'm flexible...

Oh, also, I don't actually have my own board yet (I rent one from the local surfclub), so a surfshop near the break would probably be helpful....or maybe just like a surf community sort of thing...?

San Diego has a long sand beaches, the best spots are crowded but there are a lot of spots in between where you can still surf alone. The water in a few months will be cold, so you will need a wetsuit.

Here's an excellent beginner and intermediate break:
San Onofre State Beach
located near Oceanside, California

It's my favorite break among about 80 breaks.

Another is 38th Street at Paradise Cove in Santa Cruz.

And another good beginners break is Bolinas, California.

If any of these are too advanced, then go to Mondes in Ventura County or Dillon Beach in Marin County.

All suggestions have surf shops nearby. Some within walking distance.

One additional matter. What do you mean the US may not have the best surf? Are you unaware of the quantity of surfing contests held annually on the mainland? And, by the way, Hawaii is a US state.
