Surf destinations in Asia to live in for a few months

Postby avillax » Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:48 am

Hello, I want to know about which are the best surf destinations to live for 2-3 months (winter)

I have an intermediate level of surfing, I can make cutouts, I'm afraid and dislike closeouts and mushy waves and dangerous reefs, my cousin got hit in the head in Bali (although he surfed in a place with big waves and shallow reef.

All I know about these destinations have to do with the videos I've seen, so I guess my options would be:

Thailand
Bali
Other places nearby?

Basically those beach destinations that Europeans go to as I will be living in Europe. These places have to have a good selection of boards as well as good prices, price of living should be on a budget. I work on my computer and make $1500 -$2000 a month, and I don't care if the place is cheap as long as a I'm not in a ghetto, won't have somebody breaking in and there won't be bedbugs, also it should be walking distance to the beach.

Just tell me everything you know according to your experience.

I'm currently living in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico but there are waves 1 day a week on average and the wave size is 3 feet on average. I wouldn't mind if the waves are 3 feet on average as long as they would be happening several times per week.

Much appreciated. Thanks.

Sri Lanka is also an option, though I guess it's not as cheap as Indo and Thailand. There are surf schools here, but the board rental is expensive so I'd recommend to bring one of your own. The surf's good I would say, but I really recommend to get a scooter or something so you can move between the spots. You can set up a base in the south west and then move around with the forecast. But from what I've heard, Indo is the most consistent place for surfing. Might be too crowded in some places, but you're more likely to have the whole package with surf every day, Wifi (for work) and cheap options for acc.

If you are in Mexico, why not Costa Rica or one of those Central American countries? Probably no more expensive than the tourist areas of Indo. Indo is a lot of reef breaks, it's not like Mexico where you just find a beach and paddle out wherever; although with a bit of travel and planning you can find some good spots

I would say Taiwan. A lot of foreigners came to the country and fell in love with it. They moved to the East coast and settle down there. Food and rent is cheap. We are also very welcoming to foreigners and most of us can speak a little bit of English.

You can get cheap rooms from between $100-$200 USD per month. I would say go live in a B&B hostel. It's like 15$ per day but if you stay for 2-3 months they can give you a much better deal.

If you go all the way to the South East, winter is warmish. Coldest is around 12C and on average it is around 20C during winter time. Water is always 20+

It's very safe over there, don't have to worry much about crimes.

AFAIK there isn't many reef spots. It is pretty safe and we have good waves consistently during winter. Board is a problem if you live in the rural places. But what you want is to get a board in the city then take it with you. You can carry shortboard on trains etc. Feel free to pm me for more info. I can tell you where to stay and help you out.

Theres no surf in Thailand.. Dont even bother. Unless another tsunami hits, leave your board at home.

Hey, avillax! I have been surfing in Thailand in the winter before and it was amazing, which some might find surprising because the country has a somewhat negative image worldwide. Unfortunately, I can't be of much help when it comes to long term accommodation hence I did find a discounted hotel that suited my needs. However, from what I have seen finding a place to live for a month or so shouldn't be a problem and the price shouldn't be an issue as well. Apart from that I had a great time surfing - the waves were quite big but not huge, I am sure that anyone with a bit of experience can handle them.

You can live here in Bali in a kost (room with a bed, shower toilet and rack to hang clothes) for less than usd 100/month. Local food will run you around 1-3 usd if you eat in the street. Necessary additional toilet paper for the kost after eating all meals in the street is extra. Motorcycle rental with surf rack is 60-75 usd per month, surfboards can be bought second hand in decent condition for usd 150 - 200 and are readily available in a variety of sizes. Longboards are harder to find secondhand but are available for around 250 usd (message me and I'll tell you who is holding). We have waves somewhere daily; 20+ surf spots within 45min of my house on the bukit peninsula so depending on wind and swell, somewhere is working.

I just read what I wrote....no wonder people come from all over! BTW, Lombok is next door and though I've never been there others here have and it looks great. Most prices have to be cheaper over there though you should gear up in Bali before getting into over. Other places in Indonare even cheaper (Sumbawa, Nias) but if you,re worried about hitting reef thos locations should be scratched off the list.

By the way, Whose winter are you referring to? Dry season is surf high season here running from April ish to November ish. Opposite is the rainy season and the water is anywhere from a little more dirty to filthy depending on where you are and while surfing is still pretty good it is not the same as the dry season.
