Which city is cheap, has good waves and a university?

Postby IvoDC » Sat Feb 28, 2015 10:09 am

Before tomorrow I have to choose in which city I would like to study for a year. It can be anywhere in the world. I would love to become good at surfing so I'm looking for a city with a good climate and good waves most of the year. I'm not that rich so the living costs have to be really cheap). In order to get some funding there has to be a proper university too. Friendly people and a nice climate would be an awesome bonus. Do you know any city that has this? Please let me know asap!

This is not only easy to answer, the answers provide brilliant opportunities.

A) University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) - the only campus in the US that has not one, but two surf breaks on campus. Great student & surf community, great academics, and many more breaks close by. Water temp requires 3/2 mm suit. I use this suit year round because I came from truly cold water. Many locals use 4/3 mm suit for 3 to 4 winter months.

B) University of California San Diego (UCSD) - the only other university in the US with a surf break on campus. Goodstudent & surf community, good academics, and many more breaks close by. Surf is more consistent than Santa Barbara. Water temp requires 3/2 mm suit for 6 months. Use less to no wetsuit remainder of year.

While both locations have deserved reputations for high cost of living, students always band together to beat this problem. This type of expense is more of a problem for established or mainstream adults. Both recommendations have desirable climates and tremendous opportunities for formal and informal education. Natural wonders and outdoor activities are endless, too.

Also worth considering

University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) - no surf breaks on campus, but endless great cold water surfing year round (San Diego has surf year roud; Santa Barbara is flat in summer. Am always telling my boss we need a Santa Cruz office). Campus located in redwood forest. Surf breaks are not far away. Maximum surfing community and good academics.

Cal Polytech Institute San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO) - no breaks on campus, but very mellow community. Like Santa Cruz, very easy place to live. OK surf year round. Warm enough for many to use 3/2 mm suit for 6 to 8 months. Good academics.

Sounds like all assignments, before tomorrow, not much time to get the information to make a good choice. We don't even know from which country you are posting.
Not much scope to help with that paucity of information, and the time constraint.
