surf trip end of march

I am planning a surf trip at the end of march. It will be my first trip. I surf shortboards and skill level is upper immediate. I mostly surf beach breaks, and a few points in socal. Looking for waves anywhere from chest high to at most 2-3 ft overhead. I have absolutely no reef break experience.

The places i'm looking at going are puerto rico and costa rica as i've heard they surf is pretty good at that time of year and its nice and warm. Additionally, a friend of mine will tag along but he is a beginner and mostly coming bc he just likes to party so a location with decent to good nightlife would be great (we don't need clubs or anything, just a fun area with young people). Any and all advice is welcome
