Surf Trip worthwhile?

Postby PommeDownUnder » Wed Dec 18, 2013 2:53 am

Hey all long time lurker first time poster. Basically wanted to get peoples opinions as the user name suggest recently moved to Oz and done the typical british thing and started splashing around on a lump of foam and fiberglass.

I've only been "surfing" for a few months (3-4) finally feel like im starting to make a little progress consistantly catching green waves (still missing a few). turns and trimming are getting there. Still not overly confident on larger days shoulder height probably being my limit as long as its not crowded.

Basically I'm going to be heading back to sunny England June next year and was debating on maybe taking a cheeky surf trip on my way home. hoping by that point I will have reached an ok level, surfing like 3-4 times a week normally.

Just wondered if you guys reckon it would be worth while going to a place like Indo on a guided surf trip. I'd be travelling alone and dont want to turn up to find everyone else on the trip is an absolute shredder and I'm totally not upto surfing any of the waves thus looking a complete :yearght: and wasting my money.

Cheers for any advice guys and anyone in Sydney fancy going for a surf sometime let me know sorted a car so would love to explore some other spots other than Freshie.

Keep The Stoke Alive
Al

I myself have never been on a surf trip but I figure if you're surfing 3-4 times a week and you really push yourself you'll be able to handle some on the gentler breaks in Indo. Do you have a lot of experience riding barrels? That's really going to be the determining factor as to whether or not you'll be comfortable on a trip like what you're describing.

If you are surfing that much by June you should be able to handle some Indonesian spots,
forget Uluwatu and Padang Padang, you could consider Medewi, and Balian west along the south coast. In the Mentawaiis with a surf camp there you could consider Burger world or a couple of other spots.
you could consider Heaven on the Planet or camps and homestays around Kuta Lombok and Grupuk.
Camps are fairly expensive homestays cheaper.

An important fact to remember, Freshies is a patrolled beach and there is enough traffic in the water to be safe as other people will help. in Indo you need to be capable of saving yourself only at Kuta ( bali ) is there any sort of lifesaving service.
Indo is not all top to bottom barrels, just the most consistent wave zone known.
how barrelled you get is up to you.
Worth it definitely, just imagine how you would feel if you get back to typical English having let the chance go by! :blah:
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷
