Where in the world to surf in July?

Postby mkins » Sat Dec 26, 2009 8:08 pm

Two girls looking to take a month long vacation anywhere in the world (from Canada...) next July and want it to include some surfing. We are great swimmers but novice surfers. We are willing to consider anywhere that would be affordable and have a good range of waves for us.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Thanks.

We would absolutely love to go to SA...but with the world cup and non-existant plane tickets to get there, this is not the year to do it.
Other ideas?

portugal's great in the summer, spain and france too, the swells are generally a bit smaller during the summer which will make it alot more novice friendly and there are plenty of surf camps and hostels offering cheaper accom and lessons/ improvement camps. the algarve is really nice in july and pretty warm plus there are some great sights to see, lots of history, great nightlife too. lagos is my favorite spot tho can be quite busy in the summer.
hope that helps

Costa Rica! Cocoa Beach FL is not to shabby, Dont have to worry about 10' waves and Disney is an hour away too... Ca and Hawaii seem way over crowded anymore, thats one thing to think about!

Hands down Puerto Rico, here you can thank me later :P

<edit >

The website has all the info you would need. I always book them everytime I go there. I visit PR like two times a year usually in March and november - december. I am in Florida and when it gets cold here I head for the hills, in this case PR. Been to Costa, South America and Puerto Rico is by far the best out of all the places I have been too.

Maybe Bali, Indonesia. High season in July...good swells, 50 surf spots and some amazing places around Bali - Nusa Lembongan, Gili Air. A lot of surf schools.
A traveling to the Island will be cheap if you wish go without travel agency.)
good luck

Yeah, I agree with Furan. The only draw back from going to surf in Indonesia is the flight. It's expensive (around 1200 US dollars round trip) and the super long flight from Canada (20+ hours). Other than that, accommodation, transportation, food, and drinks are cheap. Good weather all year around. You can pick your swells by going to different beaches.
Enjoy!

...In other side, the long way has a some positive arguments. For example, stop over in Singapore or in the Arab Emirates, depends what Air company will you fly.
In 2009 i have a long flight: Novosibirsk (Russia)-Moscow (Russia)-Abu Dhabi (UAE)-Jakarta(Indonesia)- Denpasar (Bali Island). It costs for me 1100 $ return, 18 days in Bali, i spend 200 $ for rent a room:-) very cheap and good expirience.Etihad Airways-the national Airline of the UAE is very comfortable and safe! If i book a tour in russian travel agency, it costs about 3000 $ for a 14 days staying. Some difference and very very uncomfortable charter flyghts with old aircrafts.

Girls. glad to see in Bali in July 2010)

Anywhere in Australia with exposed coast will pretty much pump in July.

Since you won't want to go anywhere cold tho I'd suggest northern New South Wales and mid/south Queensland. Western Australia is pretty awesome too but the places that are warmer in July are probably a bit isolated for you.

Depends on your level, and your goals. Do you want to surf hard and that is the main goal? Or do you want more shopping and sight seeing mixed with a bit of surf?
Southern California has plenty of surf in July, not a tropical paradise, or vacant waves...yet it has much shopping and sight seeing to offer. Pretty cheap and close to Canada.

San Jose Del cabo Mexico is home to a lot of surfing and has a beginner surf spot with nice hotel right in front of the spot. Costa Azul resort...pricey but lots of cheap places close by. Mexico is Mexico.

Costa Rica is a fine choice in July..the rainy season is just starting ( hopefully not to much rain) and there is lots of surf.
