Looking for good surf camp in Costa Rica or Central America

Postby Verbo » Fri Jan 22, 2010 3:57 pm

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are looking for a good surf/yoga camp in CostaRica or elswhere in Central America (but CR is our first chocie).

We are looking for a full package deal (without the plane) for about 8 days / 7 nights.

Is it possible to have some good recommandations? Thant would be very appreciated. :)

Thanks

check out http://www.vistaguapa.com/index.html in Jaco CR. My wife and I stayed there last year and it was fun. Only problem was you only get one surf session a day. If you really want to surf a lot then check out http://www.azucarsurf.com/site/index.html You will surf your brains out in Panama. Plus Bocas is a much nicer place to hang out in than Jaco. Just got back from Panama and we surfed twice a day for a week. Yoga studio right down the street and I think Mike can hook you up with a deal there for staying at his place. If you don't need guided yoga then you can get up and borrow a mat from Mike and head out to the dock. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Did you guys consider the dominican republic for a surf trip? I am living right at the main surfspot called playa Encuentro and we have some amazing surf here. The spot is also perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers and there is a really good surf school with board rentals and lessons. The town nearby is called Cabarete and apart from surfing and kitesurfing, there is also a great nightlife, very friendly people and lots of good bars and restaurants. The international airport Puerto Plata is only 20min away, really easy to get there.

I just came back from Puerto Rico on a surfing trip and I have to say, by far, the best surfing trip I have ever been in. I traveled with my wife and I can tell you Costa does not do it for the ladies or the wives, I have also traveled to Panama and although really good surf, nothing compared to Puerto Rico. As the poster above said about dominican republic, its true, but its not consistent and its also limited in the breaks you can surf.

Puerto Rico on the other hand is full of surfing beaches. Most of them break withouth no special conditions or swells ( even though they have a cold front right now and the waves are huge ). Puerto Rico fits the bill better for you in my opinion as there are plenty of things to do for the wife/girlfriend and plenty of surf also. Everytime I go I book my guy, his name is Alejandro, and he knows his stuff. When traveling with a party or the wife that is who I would suggest. His website is http://www.aguaysalitre.com

The guy is not cheap but is worth every penny if you ask me. I could write a list of reasons why you would need to book thru him and let him drive you around but honestly the guy is so booked he doesnt really need any advertising, still give him a shot if you want to go to Puerto Rico.

Costa - NO
Panama - maybe depends on what your wife likes
Puerto Rico - shopping capital of the world and surfing hawaii of the caribbean win/win situation if you ask me.

I've stayed at the witches rock surf camp in tamarindo. Had an excellent time, these guys are exceptionally well organised. All you boat trips, guides, boards, food for the day are all sorted for you, all you have to do is worry about your surfing. Plus the camp is right by tamarindo river mouth so anytime you wanna go surfing all you have to do is walk about 100yrds to the beach.
