I agree with comments about agents. I used one, but in retrospect there was no need. If you're british or from any other 'low risk' country and case isn't complicated, you'll find it quicker and a LOT CHEAPER to do it yourself (you still have to do all the reading/research yourself either way). www.britishexpats.com/forum is a great starting point for q&a and advice on everything from the paperwork to settling in once there (even if yo're not british).

Hang11: Thanks - although as you say a lot of people are getting the axe right now. Probably a good chance to look at something new anyway - where I'll actually have a life (one of the major reaqsons I'm leaving london).

Your best bet is to get an internship with an Australian company and turn that into a full time offer. And coming from your background it shouldn't be too hard. You might want to start with the big names and see what you can do--Macquarie, Barclays, etc.

I actually took this route, and although I won't be in Australia next year (probably Singapore or Hong Kong) I definitely could have requested that office if I wanted.

Let me know if you want to chat about this further, I have a lot to say on the topic.

DBBB - cheers def will do although reckon I'll find it hard to bitch about anything when I get there. Just back from couple of days in saunton. 2-3 ft max really but always a cool vibe down there - quite happy to swap the 4/5 hour journey for a stroll/bus to the beach in sydney though!

Cannot wait - just didn't realise quite how hard leaving my mates behind would feel. But guess everybody goes through that.

Old days - 5 hours from London to Saunton, might be a wave, waters cold and murky.

These days - 5 mins from Coogee to Maroubra, will be a wave, waters warm and crystal clear.

Leaving your mates behind is difficult - Im really missing surfing with the SW crew! :(

Yeah I love the atmosphere in devon. Actually - is a 5/4/3 suit too much for sydney - even now in winter? Would always rather be too hot than cold, but maybe just an excuse to go shopping for something like a 3/2 and shorts in the summer? Maroubra - not as hardcore these days I'm guessing - or is the bad press just rumours?

5mm suit waaaaaaay too warm for sydney water 8)

The water temp in mid-winter is still up there at around the UK mid-summer mark. Ive just gone back to the 3mm suit for dawnies, but a 2mm shortie is still fine for the sunny days 8)

The vibe at maroubra is still a bit aggressive, but its all okay as long as you keep your wits about you and your eyes open.

i surfed there this morning before work - fairly big and stiff offshores. Big vertical drops only a couple of metres from the beach. I gave up pretty quick

That's what I was thinking (and hoping!) - new suit when I arrive then as bound to be better selection/cheaper than here.

I'll maybe give Maroubra a miss for a while then - not sure devon every month or so ability will quite cut it with the locals. But after a few months there'll be no stopping me. So goddam excited.
