reading the waves in cali

hey guys and girls, umm...this guy told me you could read the ocean/waves, and i was wondering how you do that, since ive really never surfed before, and what should i look for? the tides? the waves? i really dont understand could someone help me out here? thanks!

dude just sit out there all day for a while and pay attention to what the waves do, and u should figure it out in no time.

reading the waves just comes with time the more time you spend surfing the easyer it gets youll start to pick out waves right out back move closest to the peak to catch it youll know what waves to take and what not etc even i find it hard to read the waves most of the time
