Board Question

Hi I was having a question about what board to get. I have looked over some of the other posts on this for some help already.

I am 5'9" and about 175 lbs. I have been surfing for a couple of weeks pretty regularly and I can popup and ride a wave consistently straight towards the shore. I can turn a little but I am still have trouble turning (I have been surfing on foamies so far so I think that makes it harder). I surf in NJ and I want to buy my first board and I was wondering what size would be good for me. I can't decide whether to go with a funboard, mini longboard, or a longboard. I want a board that I can use in most conditions since I am on a budget.

I would appreciate any advice on size of board and the brand. I was looking at Isle boards and was wondering if they were alright for a beginner. I plan on getting a custom board once I am better and won't mess it up but wouldn't mind being able to keep my first board in my quiver then too. Thanks for any advice in advance

7'3" Minimal: BIC NSP or VOLTAGE all do boards on a budget between £200-£330

Thanks for the help. I am going to go for an NSP minimal until I get the hang of things more and I trust myself with a decent custom. Looked at the NSPs at some surfshops and on their site and they have either 7'2" or 7'6.

One question, my friend who started surfing with me is also going to get a new board, but he was decided on an 8'6'. He is getting a NSP or Bic and I was wondering if the light nature of NSP and Bics make them poor choices for boards of that size since boards of that size are typically heavy.

At your size, the 7'6 would be best. I got my girlfriend (5'7) the 7'6 BIC and it was perfect for learning.

One thing that BICs and NSPs aren't is light. They're very heavy compared to a custom or a quality epoxy like a surftech. 8'6 is, in my opinion, an odd choice because at that length its a bit of a barge, but not big enough for the advantages of a longboard. Stick with your sensible mini-mal choice!
