Beginner with experience... wondering about a funshape...

Postby gqsean124 » Thu May 03, 2007 4:54 pm

OK guys.... I started surfing late summer in 06.... learned some basics on a friends old board... it was like a 7'2" gun... lol

anyway I felt the need to spend money on a shortboard since i thought i would progress fast.... so I bought a 6' 6" flyer...needless to say, i didn't progress fast due to the fact that I can't get out to the beach as often as i'd like.... and well let's face it... learning on a shortboard is hard and frustrating, especially when you aren't good.... I haven't surfed since october... I'd like to get into winter surfing, but I dedicate my winters to snowboarding.

anyhow, I want to keep my flyer, so that when I get better, I will have something to really rip with... but Im thinking of buying a used funshape, or something easier for me to progress on, ...more or less, something more suitable for my skill, and less frustrating, so i can actually have fun on...also so I'm not tearing up my shortboard in the process of learning.

Im not into long boards... they just seem too heavy for my preferences.... nothing against longboarders though.... just not my preferences...

what would you guys reccomend for a funshape in terms of size and model?? ... local shapers here take way too long make boards, and I'm impatient... so I'm seeking your help on making an expedited decision.

BTW

i'm 5'8" 155 lbs

any input is appreciated

id go with a 7-8 ft fun shape. that should really simplify things for you. I deffenietly recomend going for a second hander. you should beable to pick something up for under $200

I made myself a magic carpet 7ft single fin when i got to stage where i was starting to stand up an dride the clean face and have never looked back. Its an awesome board, fun and easy on all types of waves.
Basically it's a 7ft longboard.

brands/makes/models should be the least of your worries..as long as you get a decent board for a decent price..get something a little wide maybe around 20"-22" and something thicker maybe around 2 1/2"-3"..goodluck
