depending on the type of waves, a short board will do you fine. true they are hard to learn on, but if you are deticated then i wouldnt worry. plus it just makes you better in the long run in my opinion because you have to work harder. i am 5'11 and 157lbs and i ride a 6'6". the thickness is important too. make sure ur board is around 2 - 1/2 inches thick or more because the thicker it is, the easier it is too float. you should aim for something around 6'6" or less but nothing in the 5' range as this might be very difficult.

Hi

I can't comment on other places, but if you are in the UK I would go for something around 7' X 2 3/4' X 20'.

This will give you the buoyancy you need to learn on, but will be small enough to last you for a long while as you get better.

Cheers
