Been learning for 5-6 weeks, on a borrowed 9'2" mal.

saw a good deal on a 8" minimal so bought that.

Big difference, well to me anyhow, like back to square one almost.. Only been out on it twice so far.

So whatcha think, stick to the 8' and get used to it, go out more on the 9' until I'm a little more skilled then go back to the 8?

Stick with the 8 - it might feel like it, but you're not actually at square 1 - you're at about square 9!!

It always takes time to get used to a new board, but if you've bought an 8 footer, stick with it for a while - you'll end up loving it!

5-6 weeks is too short a time to jump down a foot and 2" board size.

Most people drop a foot a year. No wonder you noticed it.

Thought I'd drag this back up. :D

Though I was doing OK in the shore break on the 8' but now getting out back , especialy with all the paddling & relativly small waves we get here on average, I'm back on a 9'2"

My surfing is definetly improving quicker on the mal. More paddling, more waves, more faces, popups etc.

Once I'm solid catching waves etc I know I'll get the minimal back out & it'll be funkier for turns & fun in bigger swell.

Talking about being back on square one. You should try going from a 10' to a 6.10.

Been surfing several years, so I knew what I was getting into thou.

All those times I laughed my @ss off at newbies trying to sit on a short board has come back to haunt me. I still have my trusty 10' board thou. I'll never part with that one.
