Surfing Waves

Hello all,

I have a (yet another) question regarding surfboard length.

So, my go-to boards are a 5'4 27 Liters Round Tail Biscuity Surfboard (the one in the pic) and a 5'5 32,5 Liters Retro Twin Fin. Both have an EPS core.

I'm 1.75m, 68kg, 37y, intermediate. I surf mostly head high sand bottom beach breaks.

I was wondering if getting a bigger board (something around 5'11, 29 liters) would make a huge difference in my daily surfing.

What do you guys think?

What do you like about your current boards and what dont you like? How well can you surf…..what is it that you see are the next step(s) in your progression? Do your boards paddle well or are you missing waves? Do you feel like you’re on top of the water or down in the wave? What kind of waves do you usually surf and what size? Have you ever tried boards with more rocker? How long have you been surfing? Long sessions ok or do you tire after an hour? Hiw dontiu feel in chop….do your boards feel too light?

Maybe not letting the traction pad go outside of the pin line ?

Waikikikichan, yes! the traction pad is way back, but since the board is so small, there wasn't much I could do to place the kick over the rear fin. Do you think its placement is affecting maybe something? I used to ride it without a pad, but I missed one and put one over. I didn't have the courage - nor the ability - to cut it before placing it. Anyway, it's peeling off and I'm waiting for it to go naturally so I can reglue only the pad, without the rest.

Geezer, so not at all! for some reason I wast felt that shorter and stocky boards worked better for me. But most surfers my stature ride shortboards on the 6'0 range and I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I had a short lived 7'0 but I felt it was huge and almost unduckdivable. Most of my boards where in the 5'8 range, but then it was too much volume for the kind of board I liked to surf. Invariably I fell into the 5'6-5'7 range and now in the 5'4. I tried to always keep surfing proportionally larger boards with plain of paddle (larger 2/3 of the front), flat rockers and that fit in the pocket of the wave. Where I surf (Rio de Janeiro), we don't have great waves. Mostly we have short lived hollow beach break waves. So not much of a purpose having a pro surfboard that can hold great lengths of wave and run down the line.

What are your thoughts?

I would play around with different size and template fins first before buying a board. Depending on the level you're at, fins can totally change your turn in points, hold and release on the wave.
