Rusty Dwart size for the hesh?

Postby doubleseshhesh72 » Sun Jun 20, 2021 2:05 am

Hey everyone!
so here it is.
49 year old kid.
decent shape. not great but decent.
6' tall 195 lbs
decent surfer. not great but decent.
Live in San Diego and surf all the different spots and conditions. From waist high to maybe a lil overhead when Im feeling frothy.
I currently surf a 6'4-22-2.75 (about 41 liters) fish, and a 6'2"-21.-2.75( about 40 liters) EPS twin mod type thing.
I like them both but have to admit I miss waves often on both. mostly on difficult days/ mixed up chop.
On clean days like nice glass mornings with chest to shoulder waves I love them. Wave count goes way up.
I am about to buy a Rusty Dwart or maybe a Hatchet. Or something similar. probably EPS
Here is the question! I am planning on stepping up to like a 6'7" or 6'8" going up to around 46 or 47 liters. So will stepping up this far make all my dreams come true and have perfect sessions always?? Ha ha just joking. I just want my wave count up but dont want to go too far and end up with something too big. Like I said Im a 49 year old average decent surfer. Not looking to go vertical and smash airs. Just make harder sections carve and have fun.
My main two surfing buddies are 150 lb freaks of nature who still rip on tiny boards at our age so I cant ask them.
BTW I also have a 7'6" funshape that I dont mind dropping in to slightly more consequential waves with. So Im not scared of bigger boards. So go with the larger Dwart or what?
thanks!

I was around 60 years old 200 plus pounds and used a 9'6" longboard and my conditioning and surf skills were lousy but I managed to surf steep overhead waves well with great consistency. Not much help for you but it will bring your post up front for others to see.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I almost bought a Dwart second hand and thought it was one of those boards they recommend getting a few inches shorter than your typical board. More of a hybrid/mod fish. I'm about the same mid 40's and I was looking at getting one with 5-10 factory dims.
On the flipside, I had a 6-10 egg type of board recently and it felt kinda boaty when I would try to ride it more like a shortboard. It was a decent tradeoff for wave count but when the waves were decent I would usually opt for something else.
Hope the perspective helps some

Your target size and volume (~6'8" and 46L) sound right for your goals, though not sure about the Dwart at that size since it's normally surfed smaller than surfer's height. When you upsize a board well beyond suggested dims for your size, I think it can be hard to predict how it will work.

I feel like there should be a lot of great candidates in your size range, at that size its kind of like an egg which is pretty common in that size and volume. The upsized Dwart is a bit fatter than that, not sure you want a 6'8" board that is 3" thick. Your other boards are 2.75", I think a 6'8"/6'9" x 22" x 2.75" should feel easy to paddle and have more surface area to get you planing a bit earlier in tougher conditions, and sit right between your small boards and fun board. I'm just guessing though and throwing it out there as an idea.

I’d just email Rusty and tell them what you’re after. They’ve always been spot on with advice for me, and unlike any other surfboard companies I’ve contacted they always get back. They may advise you to get something that’s better for your needs. I’ve never had a bad board from them. Only my thoughts though.

thanks everyone for the replys. I went ahead and ordered a 6'8-22-2.9 @ 48 liters Dwart. I think I could have gotten away with a little smaller but foam is my friend. On a side note I just picked up a used Rusty "Big Easy" 7'4-22-2.9 at a whopping 57 liters! It was kind of an impulse buy but it was a good price. I actually had a EPIC session on it yesterday at the Cliffs. OMG does that thing get you into waves easy! Drives fast and turns pretty damn good. Anyone heard of a Rusty 'Big Easy"?? Cant find anything online. Looks kind of like a big guy short board. 5 fin. Nice single to double concave.

Hey man, I found your post randomly as I am currently considering purchasing this board for a very similar reason that you had! I’m dying to hear your review after almost a year of using the Dwart! Let us know.
