Should I buy this board?

Postby ThaSpede » Fri Jul 31, 2020 4:38 pm

Hello fellow surfers
I'm an intermediate surfer (no tricks, just riding the wave still) and I surf more than 2 times per week (depends on conditions). I'm 1.84m high and weight 76kg.

I started on a very heavy 7'8 board with 53L and I'm currently surfing a 6'8 pointy shortboard which I'm enjoying very much. The 6'8 feels alot lighter on my feet and sometimes I fall to it.
The 6'8 doesn't show any volume but I think it has around 37L (comparing to other boards that I've tried from my friends).

Currently I have the chance of buying a handmade surfboard made by a friend who has gotten experience in shaping and is producing very good boards (friend good surfers say so).
He made a 5'11 with 35L of volume with the shape seen in the image below, and he is selling it at cost value 250€ (with gloss finish).

- Do you guys think I should buy the board?
- The volume compensates the lack of length?
- I'm thinking that if it's too small for now, the price is worth for keeping the board for the future when I'm abre to ride it.

Here is the shape

Many thanks!!

It seems like a good price, but is there much value in buying something you may not be able to use? Do you think you will be surfing a 5’11 anytime soon - you are fairly tall and heavy (for a surfer); 5’11/35L isn’t too small but it’s pretty small for you. Even very good surfers will be around 30-32L at your size. Dane Reynolds, for example, is 1.84m and 80kg (so a bit heavier) and rides a 29-30L board in competition

it looks like a nice shape and it’s cheap. But it may or may not be a board you will surf much. Still, if your friend won’t be upset if you give it a try, decide it’s not for you and sell it - then you probably won’t lose much financially. And maybe you will enjoy the board

Buying is your choice!
No volume does not compensate for length , bottom curve, rail shape wetted line, nose and tail rock all work with paddle power.

You guys are right. I was a bit too enthusiastic about the price and forgot what was really important now. To get a proper board for my evolution.

Currently I'm riding a 6'8 shortboarf shape, 37L of volume.
What board do you think I should move to?
Something to surf a more powerful wave (not giant), with some maneuverability and lightweight.

Thinking of one of these 2 in 6'6 (measures down the page)

Out of the two boards listed, the first one (not the fish) better suits bigger waves. But if you have a 6’8 and want to shortboard, why not try the 6’4 version?
