Recommendations for my next board

Postby Toppo321 » Mon May 25, 2020 5:37 am

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some advice for my next board. I’m in the beginner/learner stage: I can comfortably pop up on my 7ft foamie (53 litres) and I can ride 2/3 ft green waves turning a bit to the left and right (no attempts at bottom turns yet) around 75/80% of the time. I’m thinking of progressing to a hard board but I’m unsure on what type of board, length and volume to look at. I’m 5ft 11 and weigh 83kgs. My aim is to start progressing towards riding the wave more comfortably and beginning to work towards adding in some turns in due course.

Any recommendations and advise would be amazing.

Thanks

There's not really any need to change boards at the moment. By all means do if you want to, but don't think that the board you have is holding you back or anything.

If you do insist on changing, I'd go for something like a 7'6ish mini-mal.

my favorite beginner board that now I use as my small wave board is a 7'5 x 21 3/4" x 3" speed egg, great for learning, it was the board I used when I caught my first overhead board, and I had it redone 2 months ago as my small wave board. Just get something with some volume, hard rails and a thumb tail, instead of a rounded rails and a fat tail.

Here is a website I found that talks about it: https://centerforsurfresearch.org/best-surfboard/egg/

And here is the board I had made: https://surfing-waves.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=37649
