Surfing Waves

Hey guys,

Looking to add a new board.

I haven’t surfed in awhile (2+ yrs), but finally got to spend some time in Costa the past 2 weeks and had a great time in the water.

Renting boards was sparse so mainly just 8’ NSPs.

Anyways, I have a 9’2” hobie noserider that I’m solid with and am looking to add a shorter board and try to work my way down to the shortys.

What would you suggest for North/East coast US waves, typically waist - head high. 185 pound 5’11” late 20’s?

I was looking into the beefy short boards (6’10” - 50L) Pyzel, JS and Firewires, but not sure how they would work for me.

A beefy hypto krypto seems like it may work with the boards unique shape, but I am open to any suggestions.

Any thoughts on the addvance or a torq? I don’t know much at all about torqs... or really any board that would be a great step toward becoming a better surfer in the shortest amount of time.

Anything worthwhile takes time. The longer you spend on a longer board ( building muscle memory, learning to use your weight and position, etc. ) the better you will be on a shorter board.

If you can't maximize your turns on a 8'0" mini-tanker , then you're not even ready for a 7'6" funboard. Sub-7'0 will even be more difficult as you are forced to take off where the wave is steeper and your reaction time and positioning have to be even more perfect.


But if you've been mesmerized by all the hype ( and makers marketing ) and want to take short-cuts, it's up to you. If you're the type to go from your 80cc. MX by pass the 125, 250 and go straight to 400cc. it's up to you. But be safe.

the addvance and hypto are really big boy shortboards; I think you are much better off sticking to a funboard or egg shape. Torqs are fine, or any fun board/mid length shape. If you want a firewire/brand name then look at the seaxe; but to get you back on your feet and surfing the brand doesnt matter all that much (ie Torq mod fun). I would suggest a 7'6 at least, although if you got a particularly wide board (22 inches plus) maybe you could go a bit shorter just because of the extra stability (meaning 7ft4 ish, not 6'10)

The boards you are thinking about will be your next board - assuming you start surfing regularly.

Thanks for the input guys! So a fun board or egg shape is the best route, probably around 7'6". So which board am I buying? There are so many options that I don't even know where to begin!

Firewire Seaxe v. Vacay? Maybe a Campbell bonzer egg? Thanks guys
