it's really up to you. I like big boards for beginners and short boards for more advance people nothing of those hybrids crap. Go 9+ for a long board and 6.8- for a short. Try to buy a used now, you will reck it in no time.

Isn't a 9+ foot is too long for a beginner? I've read else where that for a newbie, a board should be 12-18 inches longer than the person's height . I'm a newbie too so I wouldn't know for sure.
Hope this help!

it doesn't really matter actually, u just gotta experiment for yourself
i cant surf with boards bigger than 9'6 so i just stick to my 9'2 mostly for fun, and my shorty when im all mad or whatever
just depends on my mood i guess ;D

I would say that 9ft + is a little bit long to start on.
I would go between 7 & 8 ft - this will be big and buoyant enough to learn, but small enough to turn and progress on.
Good luck with whatever you buy!

oh yeah, if u're really serious about buying a board, makeee sure that its not like a manufactored board. i like actual shapers making my boards if u know what i mean ;D
