Eco-friendly surfing?

Hey guys!

I'm new to the site but I've been surfing for sometime. As I've gotten older and slowed down on the waves, I feel more connected to the ocean, akin to aging with an old friend. I feel like there's some responsibility for me to do my part, not calling others out, it's definitely a personal mission.

But I've been on the fence about taking the plunge into an ecofriendly surfboard and I'm curious to if anyone has any experience with them?

Any ideas on being more eco-conscious while surfing would also be appreciated!

Peace and love fellow surfers!

Get a larger plank and carve a wooden board out of it like the old Hawaiians did. That is the most eco friendly way to surf. But also leave the board by the beach so you don't have to drive a vehicle to get there. And surf naked.....well I guess cotton will degrade somewhat faster. Perhaps you are looking for eco friendlier but not eco friendly. There is a large interest in the making of eco friendlier boards but so far I haven't seen the pros using them so I guess there is much to be desired so far. But have no fear there are lots of people working on solutions right now

Firewire, in particular, claim eco friendliness. Not necessarily the board material, but the surrounding issues (energy use, disposal of waste etc). No idea if reality matches their claims.

I got NSP board that also has a eco friendly sign on it. But I don't see it being a problem as I'm hoping to surf that for many years.

Haha yes definitely eco-friendlier, planning to start on the little things, working on leaving the board at beach, only a million away from my beach home :)

I've seen firewire and NSP, I didn't know they were eco-friendly in the process as opposed to the board, good for them!

But no personal experience riding an eco board itself?

Thanks for the answers so far!

I surfed a Firewire Addvance in Timbertek with their Eco Resin. I did not feel doing a good deed for the world, and was just exhausted as always when surfing. If it makes you feel better, go for it, but I don't think it will make a big difference to the planet or your surfing.

A bigger contribution to the environment would be to stop driving (or even flying) to the beach, but taking public transportation or bikes. If your gear is too big, rent at the beach instead.
