I use the 8'2", and very happy with it. I'm 54yo, 183cm, 76kg, intermediate surfer, I also surf shorter boards.
I bring the Submoon for slower/softer waves until 2xoh. Also when I'm tired in the shoulders and expect a lot of paddling I bring the 60L SM802.
For fast and hollow beachbreaks the takeoff gets gnarly, must angle it good and fast on the feet to prevent pearling. I rather bring a shorter more rockered board then, much easier.
But in the softer waves (in Bali) this board is great.
What board did u use before? What kind of waves did/do u surf?
The Submoon is aimed at the experienced surfer who needs a bit of paddle help. It has a lot of rocker and a very thinned out nose and tail, that makes it a dynamic board for it's length. But the payoff is less paddling speed/glide, wich means u sit close to the shortboarders in the lineup.
For me, coming from shorter boards, the SM makes everything more easy. But if u come from a longboard it will be the other way around..
So for sizing, look at what u experienced on other boards and compare volume and rocker to give u a rough idea of what to expect.
I wouldn't worry about fins for now. Everybody advised me deep large's, but I use a medium thruster and never had a problem with sliding out. Just surf it with what u've got, and look at it again if there's a problem with that.
