Hey everyone I am in Miami, Fl. I just picked up surfin 2 weeks ago and took some lessons on some foamies. I plan to surf 3-5 times a week at south beach and deerfield beach, these are usualy smaller waves. I have been told by some surfer legend guy named the bug kahuna (runs a surf school)) to get a Hybrid: 7’6 – 8’ x 21 – 21 ¾ x 2 ¾ - 3 or a
Longboard: 9’ x 22 ½ x 3. although he got very technical in the differences beyween them i have some q's. Is a hybrid and a longboard equal in wave catchability?lol? from wut i understand longboard is easiest to catch waves on but once u stand up there isnt as much to do as opposed to a hybrid where its harder to catch waves but once u do theres more stuff to do? please some1 break it down for me and make some recommendations thanks

Basically a longboard is the easiest thing to catch waves on because it's so big - on some you don't even need a wave to stand!!

Don't make the mistake of thinking you can't do anything on a longboard (find some videos of Joel Tudor on the net and you'll see) but it is different to shortboard surfing.

Shortboards need a more powerful wave (or much stronger paddling) to get going, but are much looser once you're up.

A hybrid is somewhere in the middle, you won't catch waves as easily as a longboard, but it'll be easier than a shortboard, but likewise you won't be able to turn as quickly as on a shortboard, but it'll be quicker than a longboard.

Hope this makes sense!!

Cheers

You've got it about right.

The hybrid will be much more difficult, at first, to catch waves and to ride but then will be more manouevreable once you get used to it :D

The longboard will catch waves easy... real easy... but then will be harder to turn 8)

I dont know the waves in your part of the world... if they're mellow slow waves where you can get a real long ride, then the longboard would be good. But if they're a bit more powerful, or only work in short sections, then I'd go with the hybrid :D

Nothing like abusing the internet access while at work.

And if you're going to do it - might as well get straight on to it when you get in in the morning!!!!
