A new longboard will be anywhere from 600 to 1500. Its alot easier to learn on a longboard.
And if it took a movie like blue crush to make you want to surf, then you probably wont stick with it long enough to get your money out of a nice board.
Rent one untill you get sick of surfing...

gulfsurfer had a good point about rentals, but you can also pick up a board real cheap thats beat up and used, but if you havent even surfed at all yet then rent for a while

DEFINITELY RENT!!

Rent a board for the first few goes. If you're basing your wanting to surf on a film then you need to try it.

I have never met anyone who tried surfing and didn't like it!! BUT, don't underestimate it - films like Blue Crush make surfing look glamorous and easy - and it isn't really. It is HARD work - you will never have done a workout like surfing - you will discover muscles you didn't know you had, BUT you WILL love it - there's nothing like the ache you get and the feeling of sitting down in a comfy chair after a hard session!! It's Great!

I'm not trying to put you off, but don't expect to be carving after a couple of goes. You will be falling left, right and centre to start with but you will be enjoying yourself!

Rent a board for a few days and get the basics - if (and I doubt it) you find you hate it, you haven't wasted loads of money on an expensive board!!

Rent til you know it's your thang, then buy!!

Cheers
