Surfing Waves

Hi All,

I am surfer of medium ability, been surfing on and off for 10 years.

I have decided I want the following for surfing beach breaks (bondi, Australia)

I am just wondering what size to order, I am 172cm and 75kgs. It will be used mostly on smaller waves.

A rusty krypto......hahahha.....all the board manufacturers are making one now........What board and size board do you surf now? What makes you think this board (smoothie) will be good for your application?

Sizing....there are generic volume calculators, different calculators will recommend slightly different specs. 10 years with medium ability you should know some variables to consider.....do you surf mostly in mornings or afternoons? Low or high tide? At your break which is better, low or high tide and what do you need in a board to be able to surf the lesser tide?

Starting point would be to look at the size, shape and volume of your current board(s) then contrast that with the smoothie dims and filter with your achievement targets (IE - Surf board of similar shape and dimensions to the smoothie but would like to have a little better paddling.....go for a board with a little more length, volume or both.)

For me, my ability, my size (92kg), my age (46) and the waves I surf (better than average with a good amount of inherent power) I'd choose the 6'4" or 6'6" if it was more for smaller waves. But that's me and while I can duck dive the 6.6 vol size, if I were surfing small waves I wouldn't worry about that......you need to figure what you need.

yeah, what is your current board and what do you want different from the new board?

Looks like a nice board; although I like the HK outline so am a bit biased (not that I surf a HK). Think I am tempted by the green, although the orange isnt bad.

Rusty's own volume calculators says for a person weighing 75 kilos :
Inter/Beginner 39.28 L 6'3"-6'4"
Intermediate 32.74 L 5'9"-5'10"
Advan/Inter 27.50 L 5'5"

Smaller waves would tend to be more volume/longer. But at a jacking pitching beach break you could go smaller.

I just tried the Rusty calculator.....was accurate for me.

Funny those calculators, I tried Rusty and Firewire, they both use the same technology of Board Formula.

For better waves:
Rusty: 30-34L
Firewire: 47-57L

I think they give different weight to age in the algoritm..

The Boardcave calculator is a good one for me as well.....sensible recommendations for me from my point of view. I've tried some others that give wildly different results as well.....it is a bit of a wander in the wilderness, have to actually try boards and shapes to develop an idea of what will and won't work because like the masters here say, volume isn't everything, just a part of the puzzle.

Yeah, but it's a nice puzzle though. Right now I'm quite happy with my quiver, but (off course) I still want to improve it.

Notice how FireWire tends to sell larger hybrid boards and rusty is focused on shortboards...

Yes, I noticed. I can understand it, since volume calculators aren't an exact science, it leaves plenty of room for the brands to steer their potential customers their way. I'm ok with both results, my shortboard for good waves is 6'2" at 33L, for weaker waves I use a 6'6" at 48L. My big board works in good and weak waves 8'2" at 60L, this board makes everything so easy but the payoff is you lose a bit of looseness and fast turning.
