Is it time for a new surfboard?

Postby cheekobonavista » Wed Mar 15, 2017 8:41 pm

Over the past year I've moved to a new area with worse surf. As such, I've surfed less and lifted more. I've gone from about 155 lbs to 175lbs, at 5'10.

When I do surf, I now find I struggle to catch waves on my old 30 litre FC Fark. I'm thinking about a new board with more volume to catch waves earlier. Wondering how much I should go up in volume? Historically I haven't liked bigger boards, especially if they're hard to duck dive.

I'm hoping for a one board quiver. I like to surf small stuff but I often find myself in overhead waves. My current board fails me worst in large surf. I don't get into the waves quickly enough and end up with steep drops that I can't make.

I'm thinking of a board in the 34-36 litre range. I assume 4-6 more litres is a good step up in size that I'll notice? Also wondering about "one board quiver" recommendations. I like the idea of a Hypto Krypto, but kind of don't want the same expensive, commercial board that everyone is riding. Anyone know of any simular boards?

Advice and opinions appreciated :)

Sounds like it IS time for a new board...nothing wrong with a small quiver... i dealt with age by my boards getting a little thicker and wider every time I order now... regular exercise geared towards surfing and paddling with cardio when flat seems to really help...I surf no matter what size just to get out there and stay tuned up... I catch allot of waves every session and am happier for it... I came across this by trial and error... seems to work

Not sure where you're located, but it seems like it would be a perfect opportunity to get a custom board shaped by a local shaper. That way you'll have the benefit of his/her experience in making the best board for your area and you won't have "the same expensive, commercial board that everyone is riding."

I always support local shapers and think I get benefits from having them make me custom boards
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
