Looking to get a smaller board.

Hey guys,

I've posted about getting a "better" board then my wavestorm...but I think it's time I actually downgrade.

I've been surfing for about 5-6 months and these winter waves are a lot more rewarding to a surfer over here on LI. Surfed 6-7 foot waves the other day, and a lot more 2-3 foot waves as opposed to 0-2 feet 8)

My friend has a 7'6 NSP funboard and I rode it for a 2hr sesh, and I was able to catch a few waves on it...just a different feel being hard as opposed to foam and smaller, lost my balance a few times.

Anyways, would downgrading to a board around 7'4"-7'8" be a smart move? I can obviously catch smaller waves, and wanna eventually progress to short boarding. I can surf a wave sideways, know when to catch the green wave and haven't really pearled in a long long time...

I'm 160 pounds, 5'9, and in good shape if that is relevant, currently surfing a 8' wavestorm .

Thanks for reading !

If you feel you want to move on from your wavestorm, then something fun board shaped around 7'6 is a reasonable choice. Dont be tempted to go too short (under, say, 7ft4) - it might not seem like much difference, but it will be. You dont want to end up catching 2-4 waves a session and falling off 2 of them - no way to advance your surfing skills

Probably your future boards will be something like 7'6 funboard, 6'10 hybrid, 6'6 wide shortboard, shortboard (although whether a shortboard is suitable for your waves is another question).

So there is no hurry to start going shorter right now. You are still several boards away from that shortboard.

(you dont 'progress' to shortboarding, you just 'choose' shortboarding...) :-D
