Sizing for shortboard?

Postby colecit » Sat Oct 22, 2016 7:35 pm

Hi,

Looking to buy my first shortboard and what advice on blogs has been so inconsistent. I'm 6'0, 155-160lbs and I surf probably 3-5 times a week. My main board has been a 6'8 fun shape, but I've been taking out a friend's 5'8 meant for kids and I can catch waves on that too. I'm at intermediate stage, can catch waves, make bottom turns, pump down the line, etc. with varying levels of success. Surfing all kinds of breaks (from fast beach breaks to long point breaks) anywhere from 2ft - 8ft according to surfline. What size shortboard would you recommend? Right now, looking at a CI Flyer 1 with dims 6'0" x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4-- is this on the right track?

Thanks :)

Seems a bit narrow and thin for a board after a 6'8 fun shape. The flyer is a small wave/grovellor type board, will require a LOT of pumping to keep up the speed. Something like the neckbeard (looking just at CI) is probably more suited, or one of the Firewire hybrids

If you're a "average" surfer, I would recommend the "Average Joe" over the New Flyer.
