Surfing Waves

Hey guys, I'm Rodrigo and surf 2 years ago, making it 1 time a month so I have not progressed much, the issue is to buy me a 5,9x19x2 rusty and the truth is that just sank me so I decided to move me to a 6,7x21x2 in which notice the difference immediately as it could float and hopefully stop me sometimes when the tide was already breaking, but still feel that I cost too much spin when I'm paddling to catch the wave as the meeting very heavy it is a kind of swallow tail funboard, wide tip and thinner tail. My goal in this game is not to make radical maneuvers, but glide along the wave and surf relaxed kind soul donavon frankenreiter. Guys wanted them to ask what board you recommend me to achieve this goal ?.

What would be YOUR ideal surfboard ? I don't know that answer. But since you want to surf like Donavon Frankenreiter, the question should be "what would be Donovan's ideal surfboard ?" Take a look at the board he likes....

What do you notice ? A lot of Mid-Length SINGLE fins.

Never really surfed a single fin but I've been told by a lot of people it's more laid back than a thruster setup since you actually flow with the wave and your turns are nice and smooth instead of needing lots of strength into your turns, it's a really different way of surfing.

Donovan does a lot of Soul Arch bottom turns, Pig Dog rail grabs, and Reverse lay backs. You don't need a Single fin to do those. Thruster 3 fins boards develop their speed differently than single fins. Thrusters you pump pump, carve, bounce. Singles you wait for the fin to load up, and ease in to the power source of the wave.
I would learn the BASIC surfing maneuvers first, then add in your own style to those moves. Just like a golf swing, pool/billiards stroke, riding a bike, do the tricky stuff after. Learn to write the ABC's correctly, then get stylish with your signature later.

I hear single fins hold the wave better so if you want to jam a powerful turn you can just do that with a single fin board... just lay down and carve a slice out of the wave. On multiple fin boards they don't have as good traction in the water so you have to set the rail then carve. This seems to be the case for me (however I haven't surfed a single fin board in a while.) So it's not so much being more difficult just different but I guess ultimately it depends on what you want to do.
