NEW Board with damage, never touched water

Postby soriekondi » Mon May 09, 2016 2:52 am

Hello all,

So I just had a major blow to my mood. I recently purchased a 5'9 CI Average Joe brand new. I have been so excited I didn't give the board a proper look over and after I had applied my traction pad and wax I noticed a hole in the tail are next to a fin box most likely from shipping. I looked at the store return policy and its kind of on me at this point, I will call them tomorrow but for now I wanted to post a photo and see what or how easy it is to fix the hole. I have never fixed a ding in a board before and I didn't want it to be my first short board that I never even used. Any advice would be helpful.

Ouch Tiberius, you may have to wear that ding , but it is fixable.
Put aside the frothing and look at each purchase in the future, in a clear way. First dings always hurt!
I asked you in the welcome section , how experienced you were. I hope this is not a very first board, because if you have gone this short straight off you could have more problems.
Sorry but it sort of looks like you are very new to the whole of surfing.

Thats a good one!

Well you got your first ding out of the way; totally repairable and a notch to your surfing milestone belt. It wont be the last.

If you haven't ever fixed a ding then get a pro to do it
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

That's why I always save the box and packing, just in case I find some damage. But usually that area by the end of the tail is well padded.

Could it have happened when you put on the tailpad and waxed up ? Where and how did you put the traction on ?

Yes, the tail was padded very well. When I applied the TP and Wax it was in my den on my carpet floor. I really just think it is something I blindly overlooked. I had this happen with an Arcade i bought about a year ago, had a neighbor sign for it, the package looked great but the inside was destroyed. One day Ill learn just to buy the stuff in person.

Ill try to find a pro to fix it, or else Ill give it a go. Lesson learned.

Thanks,

I'm new to surfing too and I started like 2 months ago, there's no way you could surf something that small if you're new, you should start out with a foamie, learn your basics and get a feel for how the waves act then probably try slowly converting from a longboard down to a shortboard or else you'll have a month long personal hell without getting any waves
Also that ding isn't too bad, get it fixed at a surf school or surf shop and try taking some advice about not starting with that thing, it doesn't hurt to store it away at home until you learn :D

Most people don't want to be looking at an amateur patch job on their surfboard for it's entire existence. Once it is used a bit then learn to patch your own. I had a board that got dinged before I ever got it into the water. It was the only surfboard that I made from scratch. I designed it, shaped it, glassed it, but I didn't ding it. I still had the board on the glassing rack just finished buffing it out so it was all nice an shiny and my friend came to visit. He said "WOW! That is so beautiful. Can I pick it up and look at it?" I said "Sure, go ahead". He proceeded to drop it on the edge of the cement slab that the glassing rack was on. It was full thickness through 2 layers of glass on the rail and about the same size as your ding.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Man that stings. I can only imagine how crappy he felt. I ordered an Arcade last year and while I was at work I had my neighbor sign for it. He looked it over from the outside packaging and it looked good. When I got home we opened it, the inside was completely smashed. He was devastated over it. Now we laugh about it but both our hearts sunk at that moment. so metaphorically my arcade was like your surfboard.

Based on your experience level, you should not even touch the ding. Store the board somewhere safe and dry, get yourself a beat up longboard or funboard, learn to surf and patch dings on that board, then in a couple of years come back to the shortboard, fix the ding like an expert, and start riding it :)

Sorry for ur ding, my last new board got dinged too before it hit the water. It stinks!

As for a 5'9" Average Joe being the right board for ur level and dims remains to be seen. It has a lot of volume and width, if ur not a 'big guy' it could work just fine for u. What are ur dims?

Compared to a longboard u will need a steeper wave to take off, but once on ur feet it will feel much more dynamic.

Your right, tough lesson for me. I guess it's good to get the heartbreak out the way initially.

I appreciate your advice, I chose the board after hopefully dialing in my volume that I felt would work and the research in the community. The Joe is wide and at 39 liters it displaces a lot, I am 5-11 168 I only want to get into the chop or knee waist high waves. Thanks for taking the time, I appreciate it.
