Surfing Waves

Hi,i'm looking for advice,what board to get for a newbie big guy? 6ft and 18 stone//

It will be helpful to know more about your goals, fitness level and the type of waves you'll be riding. I also recommend that you rent a few boards to see what works best before buying. While the more experienced members can expand the choices, here is a suggestion to get you started. Have fun!

As a beginner you will want a longboard. As a larger guy, you will want a larger longboard. The ones Boman posted are a good size - I would suggest 9ft2- 9ft6 long, 23 inches wide and 3 inches thick. Wider or thicker is fine (or even better); I don't think you need to go longer than 9ft6. If you want to get into volume, then 70L or more

The average 'standard' longboard is probably a trifle under those measurements eg will be 2 3/4 thick or 22 1/2 wide. But there will be plenty around that suit, you just need to keep an eye out. Walden makes a good board - the mega magic (but expensive); Torq makes some that are about the right size. Bic makes some massive boards if you want to play it safe. But there are heaps of others (the ones I mentioned because you can look up on the net). The one Boman posted will be good.

Take the suggestions from Boman and dtc and look for a longboard in that range(9+ x 22+ x 3+), it should suit you well. Unfortunately guys as big as us don't have too many options when it comes to the first board, smaller people can get away starting on a min mal or funboard. Just put in the time and effort and you'll have more options as you progress your skills.

I looked up 18 stone....114kg.....I have an epoxy tuflite longboard of 9'6" x 23" x 3 1/6"...I'm currently 87kg and for all of it's volume, that board is still not buoyant enough for me to knee paddle, but plenty to surf on. Don't sell yourself short; get a bigger size longboard and have fun.

My advice have some fun first and foremost , you are a way off dealing with medium to head high yet?
Use the fun time to get your skills up above waist high you will be against it for a while!
